Fashion Heiress Patricia Gucci on Uncovering Her Family Secrets

The author of ‘In the Name of Gucci: A Memoir’ reflects on growing up in London and her mother’s anxious life as Aldo Gucci’s mistress

Patricia Gucci, 53, is the daughter of Bruna Palombo and Aldo Gucci, the late chairman of the fashion company. She is author of “In the Name of Gucci: A Memoir” (Crown Archetype). She spoke with Marc Myers.

My mother was an innocent. In the mid-1950s, she went to work at the Gucci shop in Rome as a sales clerk. Spotted by owner Aldo Gucci, she became his secretary. He pursued her, and in 1958, at 21, she became his mistress. She was young enough to be his daughter, but she fell in love with him and remained at his side for more than 30 years, holding his hand in his final hour, in 1990.

During the 1950s, Aldo Gucci was a whirlwind of energy, constantly traveling and expanding his retail empire to other European cities and to America. My mother, Bruna, was stunning and even today remains a pure beauty.

Her love for my father was from the heart, but she was torn about what they were doing. She had to break off an engagement with someone else, and Italian law at the time forbade her from having a child out of wedlock. Her secretive life left her with enormous guilt and anxiety.

As for my father, my mother was hardly a dalliance. He fell deeply in love with her. She was his life and he was hers.

When my mother became pregnant with me in 1962, my father moved her into a small apartment in London to spare her the unwanted attention in Rome. I was born the following year, and when the apartment became tight, he bought us a Tudor-style house in Hendon, outside the city.

After I turned 6, we moved to the countryside near Windsor. It was a three-floor manor house set on 5 acres of beautiful grounds. I climbed trees and had a happy existence. I remember my father visiting us at least once a month for long weekends. But communication in the 1960s was difficult. There was the occasional phone call, although it was hard to get a clear line, and air travel was not what it is today. There also was the odd telegram, but for my mother, there was a lot of waiting and not knowing.

As a result, my mother was constantly worried about what would become of us and could never enjoy the moment. She didn’t have the wherewithal to see things objectively and often kept to herself.

By the time I was 7, my mother had started to travel more with my father. She put me in boarding school, where I loved being with my schoolmates. When I went home on the occasional weekend, only my nanny would be there. I was often alone, but I never felt lonely. I loved books.

One day, when I was 9, my mother asked me to sit on her bed. She said we were moving back to Rome. She also said that while she and my father were in love, they weren’t married. He was married to someone else in Rome, and I had three half-brothers. I was excited to be part of a larger family.

In Rome, everything was different, and my mother and I didn’t get along. I resented being pulled away from my friends in England.

In my teens, music and boys were all I cared about, and my mother became increasingly withdrawn. Before long I was off to boarding school in Switzerland.

Of all the houses my family lived in, my fondest memories are of the one in Palm Beach in the 1970s. My father loved the Florida sunshine, and when the oceanfront villa came on the market in ’73, he snapped it up. My mother loved it there, too. It was where we were happiest as a family.

Today, I divide my time between a home in Geneva and one near Palm Desert, Calif. I bought the desert property in 1993 and renovated it to accommodate my three daughters. It’s a 10-bedroom home with Moroccan influences and a 360-degree view of horizons. When I’m there, I feel as if I’m in the middle of nowhere. It’s a spiritual place.

My mother now lives in her apartment in Rome. During one of my visits there in 2010, I asked her about her past with my father. She was ready to talk and even shared her love letters. After, our relationship improved dramatically. I was better able to appreciate what she had been through, and I think she felt the same about me. Now we speak every day by phone.

Looking back, I regret that we wasted so many years on misunderstandings and disagreements. Now when I talk to her, she’s much more relaxed. I’m the center of her life and she’s the mamma I always longed for.

Selena Gomez and Orlando Bloom pictured all over each other in smoking hot PDA session at Vegas nightclub

The 23-year-old had been performing in Sin City that night and was joined at the afterparty by the Katy Perry's boyfriend

Orlando Bloom and Selena Gomez get close

He's meant to be dating Katy Perry, but Orlando Bloom was photographed in a red hot embrace with Selena Gomez as they partied together in Las Vegas in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The British actor, 39, who was linked to Justin Bieber's on-off girlfriend in 2014 was pictured getting close to the 23-year-old brunette, who was draped across him as they sat close together in a booth at Light nightclub at the Mandalay Bay.
In a string of snaps from the night, the stars looked totally enamoured with each other as they sat apart from their friends.
In the first picture Orlando can be seen with his arms wrapped around the star, while she leans into his body, their heads dangerously close to each other.

A further snap - that looks far more than friendly - shows Selena appear to pull away from Orlando, who has his arm around her neck, while he stares at her face.
In another steamy picture Orlando can then be seen nuzzling the beauty as she buries her face on his chest, their hands all over each other.
Orlando Bloom and Selena Gomez found love in the club -- for at least one night -- when things got VERY physical in Las Vegas, and TMZ got pics of the hookup
Selena had kicked off her Revival Tour in Las Vegas earlier on Friday night, before heading to Light Nightclub to meet Orlando.
Arriving at around 1 a.m she headed straight to the VIP section of the club with her friends and back-up dancers, according to People magazine, where she was shortly joined by the actor.
They chatted for about 20 minutes and Bloom was spotted kissing Gomez on the cheek, eyewitnesses told the publication, though sources insisted the duo are "absolutely just friends."

The reports claims the Pirates of the Caribbean star was doing his best to try and stay inconspicuous, wearing a dark baseball hat in the club and sitting at an adjacent table.
After mixing with other partygoers, she returned to sit next to Orlando, who was sipping on a glass of water.
Orlando was spotted at the afterparty
Sources reportedly told TMZ that the British hunk was a surprise, late addition to the party and was spotted getting "touchy feely" with the 23-year-old, "neck-nuzzling" and embracing in a booth of the club.
Selena was said to be alone when she went back to her hotel room later in the night, sources insisted.
There was no sign of Katy Perry at the party. It's believed she's still in a relationship with Orlando and were photographed together at the Met Gala last week in New York - which Selena also attended.

Katy was also on the West Coast this weekend and was pictured at a Renaissance Faire in Irwindale, California with friends.
Following the news her ex-husband Russell Brand is pregnant with his first child, we doubt these photos will cheer her up.
Katy and Orlando have been dating since January
Gomez had previously had a good relationship with Perry, though as the BFF of Katy's frenemy Taylor Swift, whose fallout allegedly inspired the track Bad Blood, we can't see them being close anymore.
Selena and Orlando have been friends for a while and first sparked romance rumoured in 2014 when they were papped looking very suspicious hanging out together in Los Angeles.

At the time Orlando flat out denied any kind of romantic relationship with Selena, who he appeared alongside at a string of WE Day events that Summer.
After they were spotted jetting to Canada together for such an occasion, Orlando said: “Nah man, we were just attending WE Day.”
This was shortly after Orlando had thrown a punch at Selena's ex Justin during a fight in Ibiza, apparently started over the Sorry star's rumoured fling with his estranged wife Miranda Kerr.
Strangely, Miranda was also in Las Vegas on Saturday night, according to TMZ, where she watched Selena's concert.
Reps for the stars have been contacted by Mirror Celeb for comment.

Justin Bieber takes to Twitter after his sweary outburst: "I'm not perfect, but I'm trying" and adds he's "still short of breath"

Bieber made it to the stage after yesterday's paparazzi altercation, and posted some more deep thoughts on Twitter - but still didn't say he was sorry

Justin Bieber arriving back at his hotel after last night's show

Despite Justin Bieber's sweary outburst at the paparazzi yesterday, where he told a photographer: "What the f*** you say? What d'you say? I'll f***ing beat the f*** out of you man!" the singer made it to the stage at the O2 Arena to perform for the final date of his UK tour.
And he revealed on Twitter that he was still feeling the effects of his collapse earlier this week. "Still a little short of breath tonight but was an incredible show. London fans go hard! 4 SOLD OUT O2 shows in a row!!" he posted on Twitter.
Calm down, babes: Justin throws a tantrum

By now, we know that Justin loves a Twitter rant, and he doesn't sound very sorry about being caught on video throwing a pop star tantrum yesterday. "Too many blessings to allow the stress in," he continued. "The press made things look nuts but really I have enjoyed London. The fans are incredible. So while I have seen some crazy stuff it is all smiles. I'm gonna get some rest and keep doing what I love. Entertain all of u. Thanks."

And if you thought that the 19 year old multi-millionaire international pop star, was going to get a telling off from his mum, Patti Mallete, you're very wrong.
She tweeted: "I miss you so much. See u next week in Madrid! Gnite. Xoxo" - which is a lot calmer than OUR mum would be if we'd been caught saying the F-word in public. Justin replied, saying: "U raised your boy right. not perfect but I'm trying. love u". Cute! Kind of.
Jessie J and her "best friend for life" at the show last night

Jessie J went to see The Biebs in concert last night, and she was impressed with him (so that's something) - she seemed to enjoy it, saying "congratulations on a great show!"
He's heading to Portugal now to continue the Believe tour - let's hope things go better for him in Europe than they have in London.
He celebrated his "worst birthday" here, went to dinner in a gas mask (obviously) andwalked around in the street topless. What a week, eh?
Justin's not only the pop star having a bad-boy tantrum this week - Chris Brown had a big old rant in LA too.
